Our rights can’t be sacrificed

Re: Neighbours Frantic To Catch Bomber, Jan. 12.

According to this story, EnCana security guards are shining flashlights in the windows of people’s homes and pulling people over for interrogation on public roads. Those actions are illegal. Private security guards have no more rights or powers than any other citizen. It’s also disturbing that at least one local resident felt obliged to provide a DNA sample to clear himself of suspicion. That action runs contrary to our society’s presumption of innocence.

Tensions might be high due to the bombing. But if we don’t stand up for our rights, we’ll lose them.
