It’s time to ditch spitting Mountie

An editorial in the Vancouver Province, July 21, 2009

In 2002, RCMP Const. Ken Whitney slapped a driver during a heated dispute about a parking space.

Whitney was off duty at the time. His punishment: 25 hours of community service.

Whitney was fined two days’ pay by the RCMP. He was allowed to keep his job.

Now, according to an RCMP disciplinary report released to the Vancouver Sun, Whitney has been disciplined for spitting and swearing at a motorist back on April 13, 2007. The RCMP adjudication board delivered a reprimand and a fine of five days’ pay.

A criminal charge was originally laid against Whitney, but it was stayed after the constable sent a letter to the victim “sincerely apologizing” for the incident.

We think it is time Const. Whitney found new work, preferably outside the RCMP.

If he stays with the Mounties, give him a desk. On two occasions that we know of, this officer of the law has resorted to petty acts of violence to get his way. It would seem he is something of a hothead and, therefore, not someone who ought to be in charge of upholding the very laws he has such a hard time obeying.

There is no place in this organization for officers who slap, spit and/or swear at the public.
